Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am writing to formally petition for a late drop from the course CISC204: Logic, which I am currently enrolled in for this semester. I would like to explain the circumstances that have significantly impacted my academic performance in this course and resulted in my missed exam, which is worth 40% of the total grade.

To begin, I would like to acknowledge that I missed the exam, which accounts for 40% of the total grade in CISC204. This was due to a combination of unforeseen personal health issues and technical difficulties. Specifically, I experienced severe menstrual pain on the day of the exam, which significantly affected my ability to focus and perform at my best. Unfortunately, this medical condition caused me to be unable to attend the exam, despite my best efforts to manage the situation. Furthermore, I encountered technical difficulties with my computer that further hindered my ability to address the exam in a timely manner.

As a result of missing the exam, I have been left with a total of only 60% of the overall grade in the course, which I understand is below the passing threshold. I believe this is not reflective of my ability or effort in the course, as I have consistently engaged with the material and attempted to complete all assignments and coursework to the best of my ability. However, missing such a significant portion of the grade has unfortunately placed me in a difficult academic situation.

Additionally, I would like to explain that the timing of the final drop class deadline—April 4th—prevented me from making an informed decision regarding my academic standing in the course. At the time of the deadline, two crucial grades (except the missed exam) had not yet been posted. This lack of clarity about my final grade left me in a difficult position, where I was unable to make a fully informed decision about whether or not to drop the course. Had I known the extent of my academic standing and the impact of missing the exam, I would have made a timely request to drop the course before the deadline.

Given these circumstances, I respectfully request that my petition for a late drop from CISC204 be considered. I understand the importance of meeting academic deadlines and take full responsibility for my academic decisions. However, I believe that my current grade does not fairly reflect my commitment to the course or my academic potential. Dropping the course at this point would allow me to focus on my other courses and maintain my academic standing without the burden of a grade that does not accurately represent my performance.
