Petition Letter: Petition Letter – Request to Drop GNDS 125
To the Faculty of Arts and Science Academic Consideration Committee,
I am writing to formally request to drop my GNDS 125 course from the Winter 2025 term due to extenuating academic circumstances beyond my control that have significantly impacted my ability to succeed in the course. Specifically, the ongoing strike by PSAC 901, representing graduate student workers, has limited my access to essential academic support and feedback.
Graduate Teaching Assistants (TAs) play a crucial role in GNDS 125, being responsible for grading and providing guidance on assignments that constitute a substantial portion of the final grade. Since the strike commenced on March 10, 2025, TAs have been unavailable to grade assignments, offer feedback, or provide support, affecting approximately 50% of the course's assessment components. Specifically, part of the Creative Project (25%), the Final Paper (25%), and part of the Tutorials (20%) were assessments conducted without TA support. Without this feedback, it has been exceedingly difficult to improve on subsequent assignments or understand expectations. Additionally, the absence of TAs for clarification or academic support has further hindered my learning experience.
This disruption occurred during a critical period of the term and has adversely affected the quality of my work and overall learning in the course. Despite attempting to manage the situation independently, consulting with peers and reviewing materials on my own, I have found it increasingly challenging to keep up, especially in a writing-intensive course that relies heavily on structured feedback.
The impact of these circumstances has resulted in significant academic stress and uncertainty, making it unreasonable for me to continue in the course under these conditions. Therefore, I respectfully request to drop GNDS 125 without academic penalty.
