Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean; Dr. Stephenson,
My name is Paige Dwyer. I am writing to you as a plea to relieve a course conflict so that I can graduate with Honours this Spring (2025). I have been recently told that (as of Tuesday, April 8th, by email) only one of the Math courses I have taken qualifies me to graduate with my Honours degree, and I am desperate to request your consideration.
As a student who began their studies during Covid-19, Entry into Queen’s University life was not at all as I anticipated. Courses and new requirements were already overwhelming, but missing out on a proper frosh week and campus introduction was disappointing.
Currently, I am in my fifth year at Queen’s (Economics major, Philosophy minor), expecting to write the LSAT this August after graduation, using the summer months to prepare. I had switched my major in third year to Economics, believing it would afford me more opportunity as a stepping stone to Law school. When I had gotten into the program, I was informed that I needed to take MATH 121 (introductory calculus course tailored to science and math students). Throughout the first semester in MATH 121, I was underperforming and failing the course due to several reasons; I needed assistance financially so I started working part-time, I found it difficult to maintain given that I had not taken a calculus class ever, and my accommodations for ADHD didn’t offer me the help I needed in math.
