Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to request the opportunity to redo the Success Guide assignment from ASCX 150 section 006. I had been told by the Professor to write a petition for my circumstances.

During the time this assignment was due, my mental health was at an all-time low. It was around mid-term season, therefore balancing academics, my dance competition season and family conflict, caused significant emotional distress. The situation with my family was ongoing, and I found myself emotionally drained and unable to focus on my coursework. This family issue required my attention over an extended period, meaning many feuds while at home and many calls when I came back to school, and it severely impacted my mental well-being. In addition to the academic workload, I had rehearsals starting at 7:00 AM and practices from 7:15 to 11:00 PM in preparation for our first dance competition. The second weekend of March, I traveled to Guelph for this competition, further limiting my ability to address outstanding academic responsibilities. With everything happening simultaneously, I struggled to keep up with this course, and unfortunately, the Success Guide assignment became the task I was unable to complete.

To be completely transparent and honest, I had this assignment on my mind and on my to-do list, but I kept pushing it aside in hopes that I would feel better or find the time and mental capacity to complete it. I recognize that I should have requested an extension earlier, and I take full responsibility for not doing so.

This course is deeply important to me, not only because of what I learned, but as well, because my acceptance into the Computing program next semester depends on my final grade in the course. If I could raise my mark in this class from a C to a C+, my GPA would go from a 2.286, to a 2.307 which is the minimum GPA required to get onto the waitlist. Due to this, I am eager for any opportunity to improve my standing. If there is any way I could be allowed to complete the Success Guide assignment now, under modified conditions or for partial credit, I would be extremely grateful.
