Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

I would formally like to appeal to drop my summer 2015 course (STATS 263) late. There are several reasons revolving around this decision that I believe constitute the ability of a late drop.

As you will see in my file, I had a particularly rough year this past year and tried to fix these issues all myself. However, I have learned the error of my ways and tried to rectify them. I am on track for a successful school year, and believe that I will do better in my future endeavours with Queen's. That being said, being diagnosed with depression and anxiety was a hard thing to go through. I had to accept my shortcomings and seek assistance through my physician. It concerned me that with being enrolled in this summer course, I would have no recuperation time. No time to myself to fix what needs to be fixed about myself to ensure that this upcoming fall semester will be a good one. Therefore, I wanted to drop this summer course whilst I could.

However, in the midst of going through this rough time, my increasingly ill grandfather's health situation continued to decrease. Being in and out of hospitals for multiple illnesses and injuries, his visits became longer and more frequent. Eventually this summer, I unfortunately watched him pass away in the hospital this July (2015). This happening did not help my stressful scenario that was already building, but instead added to it. I had never had a close family member pass away so I was not accustomed to what followed, it was all new for me and not an enjoyable experience whatsoever.

The focus could not be put properly on my course with so much happening this summer. I regret the decision in taking this course, however I could not foresee future happenings that would prevent my focus from being put on this course. Between diagnoses on my mental health, and the loss of a dear family member, I believe I really need this time now more than ever to heal and strengthen my moral in time for the fall and winter terms, in order to have a fresh, ready and positive outlook to the school year. This is why I am requesting to drop out of STATS 263 in the Summer 2015 term late, in order to take it at a later time.

Thank you for your consideration,
