Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am writing to request a Credit Standing (CR) in STAT 263 – Introduction to Statistics. Twice this academic year I was compelled, for documented medical reasons, to defer the final examination. In each instance I was acutely ill, and the timing of these illnesses—entirely beyond my control—prevented me from completing the single remaining component of assessment despite strong performance in all earlier coursework. The first episode occurred during the December exam period. I developed a severe respiratory infection that caused high fever, dehydration, and shortness of breath. My physician considered hospitalization and ordered bed rest; he provided a medical note, which I submitted promptly for academic consideration and followed up with my professor. The illness left me unable to attend the scheduled examination or even to study effectively during the crucial final‑review period. After following treatment and regaining full health over the winter break, I prepared for the deferred sitting. Unfortunately, during the January deferred‑exam period I experienced a recurrence of infection. My doctor again certified that I was unfit to write and advised an additional week of rest; I submitted the note for academic consideration. These two short, intense medical events affected only the final exam. Prior to falling ill, I completed every quiz and the midterm with an average of 93 percent, indicating consistent engagement with the class. I stayed in close contact with Professor Molson, who has confirmed my diligence and suggested that petitioning for Credit Standing is the appropriate path for students who, like me, have completed the term’s work satisfactorily but are prevented by circumstances from writing the final. Granting a CR would provide an outcome proportionate to the work I accomplished and would allow me to progress to upper‑level courses that could require STAT 263 without delaying my degree plan or affecting my GPA. In light of the detailed medical documentation enclosed, my sustained academic performance throughout the term, and the supportive recommendation of my instructor, I'm respectfully asking to approve Credit Standing for STAT 263. I remain available to supply any additional information you may require and appreciate your thoughtful consideration of my situation.

Sincerely,

Vladimirsky, Noah (20357524)
