Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am filing this academic petition in order to request a Credit Standing for SOCY122 taught by Golshan Golriz through the fall and winter semester. I received a D- in this course, however these results are due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control. Following the winter reading break, I fell ill and was unable to attend classes or tutorials as usual, and was admitted to Kingston General Hospital for treatment. Because of this illness, I was unable to write the midterm exam. I deferred this exam by contacting Christina Salavantis, the Program Associate for SOCY122. However, the PSAC strike then began and I was never given an opportunity to write this deferred exam, as the strike did not end until the end of the semester. Furthermore, I found progressing through this course immensely difficult in the absence of tutorials or formal lectures, also being impacted by my disability recognized by QSAS. I do not see my other courses this semester as being directly affected to this same degree, as one course was online and thus unaffected by the strike, and another did not include tutorials from the beginning, which is why I am only asking for one class to be given Credit Standing. I have since recovered completely from this illness, and the strike has ceased, and thus these set-backs are not chronic and will not affect my performance in the coming semester. It is my hope that this evidence will suffice in supporting my case, as I truly believe I was subject to conditions beyond my control which prevented me from performing at my best.
