Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean and Petition Reviewers,

I am writing to respectfully request permission to drop PSYC 301 (Advanced Statistical Inference) from the Fall 2024 term after the official deadline due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control that significantly impacted my academic performance.

I have been experiencing an ongoing mental health condition—anxiety—diagnosed in May, 2021. Since April 2023, I have been receiving continuous medical support for this condition at CDK Family Medicine & Walk-In Clinic, as confirmed by the attached medical note from my physician, Lyne-Ann Nguyen. Despite my best efforts and ongoing treatment, my anxiety continues to cause severe flare-ups that impact my ability to focus, retain information, and perform academically.

These challenges specifically hindered my ability to complete PSYC 301, a course requiring substantial focus and understanding of complex statistical concepts. I attempted to complete the course and even requested a deferred exam to give myself additional time. However, the severity of my symptoms persisted, making it impossible for me to perform adequately.

Additionally, I have been engaging in psychological counselling sessions, as confirmed by the attached Letter of Certification from Shenzhen JinQi Technology Co., Ltd., covering the period from August 2024 to March 2025. These counselling sessions were part of my ongoing efforts to manage my mental health condition.

Although I successfully completed other courses during this period, the intensive nature of PSYC 301, combined with my difficulty with statistical concepts and the pressure of the final exam period, made it impossible for me to achieve a satisfactory outcome. I initially did not drop the course before the deadline because I was hopeful that I could complete it, but this decision ultimately placed me under overwhelming pressure.

Upon the recommendation of both my physician and my therapist, I believe it would be in my best interest to drop this course and retake it next year when I am in a better position to manage my studies effectively.

Thank you for your consideration. Please let me know if you require any further information or documentation.

Sincerely,
Linyi Zhou
