Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean Dr. Jenn Stephenson,
I am writing to formally request permission to enroll in MATH 121 for the Summer 2025 term, despite having missed the Last Official Date for Adding Classes.
I was unable to register on time due to an unforeseen and temporary family emergency that required my immediate attention. My grandmother suffers from severe dementia and lives in Penticton, BC, several hours away from the rest of our extended family in Vancouver. Normally, her husband provides 24/7 care for her, but he was recently diagnosed with cancer and had to move to a hospital in Vancouver as well for treatment. In the meantime, my family has been taking turns caring for my grandmother over the last few weeks until professional support could be arranged.
Last week, one of my cousins was supposed to care for her from Friday to Sunday but had to cancel at the last minute. I had to step in immediately and drive up to be with her after work. In the chaos of the circumstances, I unfortunately missed the deadline to enroll in this summer course.
I am petitioning to enroll in MATH 121, which I need in order to complete my Life Sciences (Major) degree. I have just finished my fourth year, and enrolling in this course over the summer is essential for me to graduate this Fall 2025. I have already contacted Professor Li, who has provided her written support and plan for my late enrollment. I have included a screenshot of our email correspondence to prove her support.
I would also like to add that this situation has now been resolved, as we have arranged for professional in-home care for my grandmother, and I no longer need to be one of her temporary caretakers. I want to emphasize that this circumstance will not impact my ability to fully commit to and succeed in the course.
Because this extenuating circumstance was a family emergency that has now been resolved, I do not currently have professional documentation. However, please let me know if there is any other information I must provide to support my request, as I am very anxious to fulfill this requirement.
I recognize the importance of respecting academic policies and deadlines, and I would not make this request unless it were absolutely necessary for my graduation on time. I am committed to completing this course successfully and sincerely appreciate your time and consideration.
