Petition to Waive Requirement to Withdraw

Dear Associate Dean Fraser,
I am writing to respectfully request a waiver of the requirement to withdraw from my academic program. I fully understand the importance of academic standards, and I do not take this request lightly. I would like to provide a clear explanation of the extenuating circumstances that affected my performance, the steps I have taken to overcome these challenges, and why I am confident in my ability to succeed moving forward.

During the past academic term, I faced several significant personal challenges that were beyond my control. One of the main difficulties I experienced was severe social anxiety. As a new student entering a large and unfamiliar academic environment, I found it incredibly difficult to participate in classes, attend labs, or seek help when needed. This anxiety caused me to feel isolated and overwhelmed, especially in situations that required collaboration or verbal communication. I was afraid to ask questions or admit when I was struggling, which made it even harder to keep up with the material.

At the same time, I was also dealing with personal stress related to family issues and adjusting to a completely new environment. Moving away from home and transitioning to university life, especially without prior experience in lab-based learning, was a major shock. I had never done labs before, and this new experience added to my stress and uncertainty. The combination of academic pressure, family concerns, and my mental health challenges deeply impacted my ability to focus, stay organized, and succeed.

Despite these challenges, I have made significant strides in turning things around. I reached out to academic advisors who helped me develop a structured plan to manage my time, reduce stress, and stay engaged with my courses. I also sought support to help manage my social anxiety and practiced techniques to become more confident in academic settings. I have since resolved my family-related issues, and I now feel fully settled and comfortable in my new environment.

As a result, I have already begun to see a major improvement. In my Math 121 course, I have achieved grades of 85% or higher on most tests, which reflects my true academic potential when not hindered by external stressors. I am now better equipped with tools, habits, and support systems that will help me stay on track academically. I feel confident, focused, and ready to perform at my full capacity in the upcoming semester.

I am determined to succeed and make the most of my education. I sincerely hope you will consider this petition and grant me the opportunity to continue in my program without interruption.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Dev Patel
