Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am requesting this petition for permission to take a summer course in American Sign Language (ASL) at an outside institution. This course would fulfill my language requirement for my linguistics minor. Taking a language course in ASL would not only fulfill this requirement but would greatly benefit me in my long term goal of becoming a speech language pathologist.

I am requesting this exception as this summer, Queen’s is not offering any summer language courses and does not offer an ASL class. In my academic path at Queen’s, I unfortunately only took LING100 in my second year, setting my slightly back in the minor and leaving me with a heavier course load. The ability to take this course in the summer would greatly benefit my course preparations for the upcoming fall and winter term.

I have researched multiple courses, and found many opportunities to take this course over the summer at a Canadian University online. I would greatly appreciate this opportunity and it will benefit my future, not only at Queens, but in my career.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: If my petition was granted, and I had the ability to take American Sign Language (ASL) it would significantly aid my academic career, and future success. By completing this ASL course in the summer, I will have completed 3 units of the 6 language units required for my linguistic minor. This will give me more flexibility in the fall and winter semesters in terms of managing, registering and balancing my Psychology and Linguistics Courses. Taking this course will also allow me to dedicate more time to my other courses in the upcoming semesters.

With this course, I will continue to be on track to graduate in the spring and have flexibility in my courses and guaranteed completition of all my required courses. This also sets me up to have all my important courses and submit my best work possible in my fourth year, putting me in the best position with the best experience to apply to Speech Language Pathology for graduate school.
