Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I respectfully request a waiver of the one-year deadline to submit a petition concerning a failed course I took in the winter 2024 term with the course code STAT263.

During the course enrollment period for my second year, I enrolled in this course under the assumption that it was required by my program. I later discovered in my third year that I mistakenly followed the program requirements from the 2023-2024 calendar rather than the 2022-2023 calendar that applied to my cohort. This error occurred because I was unaware that Queen's annually changed the plan requirements and that students must refer to their archived calendars for their entry-year curriculum, or SOLUS.

I unfortunately failed the course after performing poorly on the final exam, missing a passing grade by a few percentage points. Since I was also unaware that a petition process existed at that time, I accepted the failure and attempted to compensate by taking six courses in the winter term of my third year. This heavy course load was further lowered by the cumulative GPA.

During a recent academic advising appointment for methods to increase my cGPA, I learned about the petition process and was advised that this failed course, which I did not need to take, may qualify to waive the deadline to drop a late course/apply for credit standing that has been more than 1 year. I am now submitting this request as soon as possible following the advising session.

I understand the importance of academic deadlines and accept full responsibility for my earlier misunderstanding, However, I respectfully ask for compassionate consideration by allowing this late petition. I intend to take any and every appropriate step to improve my academic record as I prepare for future goals, including medical school.

I appreciate your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Haider Ali Shah
