Dear Associate Dean (Academic),
Two years ago in 2023 I unfortunately had a car accident, I was new to driving at that time and eventually had an
accident properly resulting in a collision with a stationary vehicle (no one was in it) near my home in Collingwood
Ontario. The Police came and filed a report, I paid the consequences (money wise), however ever since then I have
always had nightmares not just when sleeping but during the day as well when I would sometimes just lose focus
and remember the incident as if it was happening in real time overtime this decreased but it always came about
during high stress periods such as exams although I never paid any attention to it as it would only be these
moments in a normal day it would rarely occur. However exam season was extremely hard to focus on with the strikes going on plus my nightmares I wouldn't get any sleep and would be super tired to study or work on outstanding assignments this accumulated and it was overwhelming by the end. No work would get done as a result of this and with the inclusion of the strikes these were both out of my control and I felt like there was so much uncertainty regarding the strike and also the nightmares. Looking on it now I realize this is a psychological challenge now however during exams it was hard to go get support/help as i focused on studying, I tired to go to quiet places and it worked for a bit until later then I would lose focus due to these dream shocks.
These took place during both the fall and winter semester exam periods however more prominently affected myself during the winter semester as it was not only the nightmares but also the strikes occurring as well. The shocks also occasionally happened during the regular semester periods and the result would be late assignments or un submitted assignments and by the time I would try to finish these it would be too late to get anything done.
Academic plan: However with all that being said:
- I will be speaking to a Psychologist sometime in the near future about how to deal with this moving forward for the next few years at University and in general.
- For future assignments I will be speaking to academic advisors more frequently and going to see the profs in their office hours for questions and concerns regarding deadlines.
-Will be taking for the courses I failed, an extra course next fall term in the HIST department and an extra course in the winter term to recover credits, plus two courses in the spring term/summer term, from there will continue to pursue a degree in a History major and potentially a minor in music studies if so permitted,
-The ultimate goal is to get into the teachers college at queens and become a high school teacher.
- frequent visits to mentors, and bounce back programs in case one course isn't going to well in the next term,
-I Plan to attend every lecture just as before and every tutorial (didn't attend some because of the shocks and sleepiness due to that)
-if struggling with the psychological challenge will be consulting academic advisors and seeking help from doctors in the area while keeping in contact with my psychologist if needed and if the issue persists
-I doubt It would be a severe issue once handled and given more time as as stated previously it has dwindled however came back occasionally but mostly in high stress or high work moments.
- If I can lock in why that happens it would stop the shocks entirely and there would be no consequences academic wise
- seek help from academic advisors if problems persist and talk to healthcare professionals on campus if needed,
-cut extracurriculars and only limit them to those that benefit a future job resume
-take lighter courses if music is allowed to be a minor for my plan then this is where the lighter courses for me personally will be as I have a big history with it, plus with history courses something I am very passionate about these courses shouldn't be too heavy
As for the Documentation for the police files should be on record of the incident and grades are on SOLUS,
No documentation for the psychologist as of right now as I have not seen them yet but will in the near future.
Sincerely,
Andrew Quiroz
