Petition
To Whom It May Concern:
I would like to petition to drop a course after the academic outline.
I would like to petition to waive the requirement to withdraw for one year.
Last year in June of 2024 I took a pregnancy test and became aware of my pregnancy.
Still, I continued with my studies while being pregnant and gave birth during as well. AS you
can imagine this would greatly impede my ability to be as focused on my studies as I
would’ve liked to be.
Even through nursing around the clock and a stint in the mental institution due to
postpartum psychosis I finished my classes and improved my GPA from last year showing
that I am capable of continuing my studies even while taking care of myself and my baby.
It is entirely unfair and cruel to force me to take a break from school during this transitional time in my life and implore you reconsider. Let’s support single mothers instead of weighing them down. I am doing this to improve my life and that of my children.
I gave birth on February 27th, 2025. I had a mental breakdown starting somewhere in the last week of my schooling and was admitted to the mental institution April 24th, 2025, and was discharged on April 30th, 2025.
I plan to continue to only take three courses each rather than add any more so I may focus with intention on my classes.
I will reach out for supports if needed to extend deadlines on my assignments.
I will draft and follow assignment completion plans by the example provided by the Student Success Centre to ensure timely and non-stressful assignment completion.
I will use the Writing Centre. I will use the Student Success Centre. I am applying for QSAS.
I will use the Student Wellness Centre.
I was an interest student for two school years to prove my grades and comprehension before continuing to the degree course and I was successful in completing that, I deserve to be in my current degree plan.
While there has been incomplete work from prior sessions, it was due to an unplanned pregnancy during my school year in which I still raised my GPA. I will be petitioning for a late drop of these incomplete courses.
I will not be working during my studies.
I believe my full-time course load of 9 credits is sufficient as I have been able to keep up before pregnancy and my post-partum psychosis episode and even during as again, I still increased my GPA.
I have a legitimate disability Bipolar Disorder 1 that causes manic and depressive episodes for which I only became diagnosed in January 2024 from 2021 to 2024 I have managed my studies well for someone constantly dealing with highs and lows. Now I am constantly medicated by injection which started in April 2024. I see a psychiatrist regularly and I have support plan created for me that outlines getting help from friends if ever needed. I can identify the signs of my mania and depression now to mitigate the risk to my schoolwork. I will be making use of the Student Wellness Centre and applying for QSAS.
I will be developing my time management skills by using the assignment planners, I will be using the Student Writing Centre for planning better essays in the future.
I will use QSAS for Academic Consideration. I will ask for deadline extensions with proof if needed. I will use all the Queens-given supports possible that will aid my success.
I struggle with time management and the assignment planners will help. I have started using reminders in my phone and posting my assignments on a white board on my wall, so I don’t miss anything.
Office hours, TAs, retaking courses, mentoring/tutoring, study groups
I have retaken my ENGL 100 class and will be retaking my ENGL 200 class, then my core courses will be finished, and I can focus on my electives only which will make it much easier. I actively reach out to my Tas when needed. I am aware of where to look for office hours for aforementioned resources. I actively engage in WhatsApp study groups with other students during the school year.
I am applying for QSAS and will be making regular use of the Student Wellness Centre.
My coursework was not less fulfilling than expected, I was just dealing with mental illness, pregnancy, post-partum struggles, psychosis, and a new baby. I love my schoolwork and want to continue; I do not want to take a forced break.
I have used an academic advisor to help me with this plan content and plan to use one again throughout my time at Queens.
I am an online student so attendance doesn’t come into play as everything is asynchronous which works in my favour as I can plan around my life events very well. Balancing academics is easy enough when my mental health is stable and like mentioned before I am now on an injection which always keeps my meds in my system. Now I have a baseline foundation. I have a village who can help with my kids whenever I ask so that I can focus on schoolwork, and I just recently made use of that to do a quiz.
Study skills questionnaire, workshops, time management reflection, I will make use of all three of these resources moving forward.
For my Situational demands such as illness or emergencies etc. I will make use of all these services; Academic Consideration Request Portal, Academic Petition Portal, Student Wellness Services, and Academic advisor supports.
My baby’s birth certificate is late and still incoming in the mail, but I have attached an email showing the receipt of the Register of New Birth Package and I will attach the letter from my psychiatrist confirming the dates I was in the Psych Ward.
Sincerely, Naomi Hogan
