Petition Letter: Petition for Grade Change from D to CR (Credit) – PSYC 100

I am respectfully requesting a grade change from D to CR (Credit) in PSYC 100, in accordance with Section 3.3.1.4 of the Faculty of Arts and Science Academic Regulations. This request is based on significant extenuating circumstances during the Winter 2024 term that prevented me from achieving a grade reflective of my academic ability. This grade is currently preventing me from meeting the GPA threshold required for admission into the Applied Economics major with the Policy Design and Evaluation sub-plan, which is the core focus of my academic goals.

My academic performance in PSYC 100 was impacted by multiple factors beyond my control:
-The university-wide TA strike disrupted course delivery, communication, and access to academic support.

-My final exam was administered in a hall during ongoing protests and loud music, creating a highly distracting environment that made it extremely difficult to focus.

-Throughout the term, I submitted all lab assignments on time but received no grades. I contacted the department and was later informed that four labs were dropped due to absences, including two I had attended but did not sign into. While I understand this followed the department’s policy, the lack of clarity and feedback contributed to my uncertainty about course standing and added academic stress.

Despite these challenges, I remained committed to my coursework and maintained strong performance across the rest of my courseload. I earned an A in Political Studies, which I intend to declare as my second major. I was enrolled in a demanding term that included both economics and political studies courses, and I completed all PSYC 100 course components, including the optional 5% bonus assignment. I also submitted an Academic Consideration request during a personal challenge and took steps to seek support from campus resources.

My primary academic objective is to major in Applied Economics with the Policy Design and Evaluation sub-plan. I have been in communication with the Economics Department and am passionate about applying economic analysis to real-world policy issues. This program closely aligns with my strengths, interests, and long-term goals. Unfortunately, the D in PSYC 100 is disproportionately affecting my cumulative GPA and currently stands in the way of my admission to the program.

Given the combination of strike-related disruptions, unclear course feedback, and environmental conditions during the exam, I do not believe my grade in PSYC 100 reflects my academic potential.
