Petition Letter

Petition Letter: During the fall semester, I got referred to student wellness by the Queen’s in-residence therapist for ADHD, as I met the majority of the criteria for a diagnosis. Unfortunately, the doctor I met told me that I didn’t need an ADHD diagnosis and said that if I were to treat my symptoms of anxiety, my ADHD symptoms would correct themselves. Because I was still struggling despite regular visits with my therapist, I finally was able to get a diagnosis from a doctor outside of Queen’s for ADHD, depression, and anxiety from a private clinic. Good news is that I have an appointment on February 4th with my doctor to receive a prescription for medication.

I had also been a Don for one and a half years in student housing, and due to the working conditions drastically changing from the previous year, turning into quite a toxic environment, I needed to resign from the position to prioritize my mental health, especially while I was in the process of having my ADHD and anxiety assessed.  During the beginning of January, I had to find a new place to live and was officially moved out by January 13th.

The stress of finding a place to live, moving, and currently living unmedicated with ADHD, depression, and anxiety accumulated into task paralysis over the following week. Most days it was nearly impossible to even get up to eat or shower, let alone study or leave the house.

I have been and still currently am in the process of rebuilding a good support system to help manage everything and have been taking steps to get my mental health in good order.  With your permission to go forward and take the exam and get a CR on my transcript, I believe I will have the capacity to succeed in the future and will start to initiate the petition process with Queen’s.

Thank you for considering my request to petition.  I appreciate the chance to provide context and would be more than willing to discuss this further in-person if you have further questions.
