Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Members of the Academic Appeals Committee,

I am writing to formally request that the assignment I submitted for ENSC 321, which was not evaluated due to the faculty strike, be reviewed and included in the calculation of my final grade for the course.

During the strike, I continued to complete and submit my coursework in good faith, believing that my efforts would be recognized once normal academic operations resumed. Unfortunately, the assignment I submitted during this period was never assessed. As a result, my final grade does not accurately reflect the full scope of my work, learning, or the commitment I demonstrated throughout the term.

Furthermore, I would like to express concern about the decision to increase the weight of both the midterm and final exams to compensate for the ungraded assignment. I had already completed the midterm under the original evaluation structure, and to retroactively increase its weight alongside a high-stakes final exam was not only inequitable but also detrimental to students who were already under significant pressure due to the disruptions caused by the strike. Despite putting in my full effort, the redistributed grading significantly lowered my final grade.

This outcome has had a serious impact on my academic standing. My final grade in ENSC 321 was lower than what I believe it would have been had all assignments been graded as originally intended. This, in turn, has affected my GPA and ultimately prevented me from qualifying for the Dean’s List. I am deeply concerned that this may negatively influence my future academic opportunities, including my eligibility for competitive graduate programs.

I respectfully request that the ungraded assignment be marked and incorporated into my final grade for ENSC 321 to ensure a fair and accurate reflection of my academic performance.

Thank you very much for considering my petition. I am happy to provide any additional information or documentation upon request.

Abby Brooks
