Petition Letter: To: The Associate Dean of Arts and Science (Academic)
Dear Dr. Dorit Naaman,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to formally request a review of my academic record from the 2022–2023 school year, during which I unfortunately failed 9 out of 10 of my first-year courses. At the time, I was unaware that I had Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a neurodevelopmental condition that significantly impacted my ability to meet academic expectations. Since then, I have received a formal diagnosis and have taken considerable steps toward understanding and managing my condition.
Following my academic standing review, as instructed, I took a year off from Queen’s, which is now completed in full. During this time, I pursued a formal psychological assessment, resulting in a diagnosis of ADHD – Inattentive Presentation. The challenges I experienced during that first year—chronic difficulty with focus, organization, task initiation, time management, and information retention—now make sense in the context of this diagnosis. These symptoms directly contributed to my academic difficulties, and I did not have access to accommodations or supports that might have mitigated their impact.
I am now working with Queen’s Student Accessibility Services (QSAS) and have requested an accommodation plan. I feel confident that, with the appropriate academic support, I will be able to meet the demands of university life and demonstrate my true academic abilities.
In light of this newly understood and professionally documented disability, I respectfully request that the failed grades from my initial year be removed from my transcript. I believe this would not only reflect a fairer picture of my academic potential but also acknowledge the circumstances that were outside of my control at the time.
Finally, I wish to acknowledge that I have missed the submission deadline for this petition and would ask that you please consider waiving it. Following the receipt of my Request to Leave, I decided that my academic career at Queen’s had come to an end, and I had no intention of re-registering for study, which meant a petition at that time was unnecessary. It was only following my diagnoses in early 2025 that I had a change of heart, and my desire to continue my studies was rekindled. If you would please consider my request, I would be grateful.
