Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Academic),

I am writing to submit a petition for a late course drop of ENGL 114, ARTH 120, and SOCY 122, as well as a waiver of the petition deadline, due to serious medical circumstances beyond my control during the 2023–2024 academic year.

As outlined in the supporting letter from my physician, Dr. Sharon Gazeley (Sept. 18, 2024), I have long-standing health conditions, including generalized anxiety, depression with suicidality, ADHD, migraines, and asthma, compounded by caregiver stress related to my mother’s chronic illness. After starting university in September 2023, my mental health deteriorated significantly, leading to multiple ER visits in Kingston, ongoing psychiatric care, and counseling through Student Wellness Services. I also underwent repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) treatments at CAMH, alongside multiple adjustments to my psychiatric medications under specialist supervision.

These circumstances severely impacted my ability to complete coursework and meet academic expectations. While I technically passed ARTH 120 (D-) and SOCY 122 (D), these grades are not reflective of my true academic ability but rather the overwhelming impact of my health challenges. Similarly, my inability to complete ENGL 114 was directly tied to these extenuating circumstances. In contrast, my B in ASTR 101 and C+ in ENGL 104—achieved during brief periods of improved stability—reflect the level of work I am capable of when my health is managed.

I understand that dropping courses with earned credit is not standard policy, but I am respectfully requesting exceptional consideration for ARTH 120 and SOCY 122, in addition to ENGL 114, due to the severity of my medical circumstances. Furthermore, the ongoing nature of these health challenges prevented me from submitting this petition within the one-year deadline, which is why I am requesting a waiver of the petition deadline.

I am now in a significantly improved and stable condition, with ongoing support and treatment in place. I am prepared to provide any additional medical documentation or records from CAMH and my physicians to further substantiate this request.

Thank you for your time and understanding.

Sincerely,
Ahasan Monjur Jaigirder
