Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I am writing today to petition for Aegrotat standing within my courses of the winter 2025 semester.
I experienced a significant traumatic event in February that caused a mental health crisis that severely hindered my ability to function in any sort of a normal sense. This in turn made it next to impossible to do day to day tasks including any sort of academic studies. Getting to class each day was very difficult and studying and completing homework was next to impossible for me. Before this event I was succeeding in all of my course work and assessments but after the event I would struggle to even take notes in class. My ability to mentally process anything was completely absent, making simple tasks of daily living incredibly hard. This was debilitating for months and only recently have I been able to start reclaiming my ability to properly handle the tasks in my life.
During the second half of the winter term I made contact with SWS for crisis counselling on a regular basis. Due to the recommendation of the staff at wellness I decided to defer my exams and take a medical leave that would allow me to recover mentally. This has allowed me to continue getting the mental health support I need to work through and process the events that caused the crisis and to put strategies in place for my return to school. I am currently in contact with a psychiatrist and a private therapist who are helping me put the strategies I need in place. As well I’ve received four mental health diagnoses including depression and anxiety.
While I am doing better I believe that writing four exams within the span of a month and returning to school will be quite difficult for me. Because of this I would like to see if I can receive Aegrotat standing, given my success in my classes before the event. While I am applying for Aegrotat standing for all four of the classes in my petition I understand that the requirements for this are rather high. However, I believe that being granted Aegrotat standing in some of the classes I am petitioning for would have a significantly positive impact on my process of returning to studies.
