Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean, my name is Gillian Snider and I am a third year at Queen’s University. I am petitioning to have a course from the Spring 2025 semester removed from my transcript. The course in question is CLST 205.
I was unable to successfully complete this course due to the following extenuating circumstances, I suffer from multiple mental illnesses that can greatly hinder my ability to function successfully on a day to day basis and to perform academically. I submitted details about my illnesses when first applying for my academic accommodations via the QSAS process. I have also submitted a recent off campus physician’s letter to provide more details about my mental state during my last two petitions for the Fall 2024 and Winter 2025 semesters.
While I was able to complete and pass two out of my three summer courses. I was unsuccessful with CLST 205. There were some technical issues while submitting my final assignment but it was the late penalties that made my final grade suffer. I handed in the final project fourteen days late with the assumption that my accommodations were acknowledged and talked about with my professor. I could not find the email thread discussing my accommodations with my CLST 205 professor, Callie Callon, but could find other emails sent to her. Due to my anxiety when put under immense stress, I did not discuss my worries about me almost not being able to complete my final project with anyone, my family included. My mental illnesses hinder me from having these serious conversations and I need professional help to understand and manage my mental blockages.
In an attempt to cope with my mental health issues, I talk to family members and participate in regular therapy appointments while also taking my prescribed medications daily. While having these conversations with family or my psychologist, we discuss ways to help me persevere, exercises to calm me down, and things to help improve my situation.
For future plans to help me succeed academically, I am going to continue to take a reduced course load as I started doing in the Winter 2025 semester. I found a new psychologist to further help me with my mental health issues and provide me new coping mechanisms to deal with mental blockages. My family is helping by putting me on a stricter schedule with daily check-ins to make sure I am caught up with my work and on the right track to success.
I appreciate your consideration in this matter and look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Gillian Snider
