Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dean’s Office,

I am writing to request approval to complete two additional French courses (6.0 units) through Athabasca University under a Letter of Permission.

I am currently in my fifth year of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Kinesiology (Specialization) with an undeclared Minor in French. As part of my specialization, I am required to complete 102 mandatory credits, and I am also pursuing 30 additional units in French to meet the requirements for a French teachable in teacher’s college. As a result, I am completing well beyond the standard 120 units required for graduation.

I recognize that I previously completed 6.0 units through a Letter of Permission in Summer 2024. However, the two Athabasca courses I am now requesting would not be applied toward my degree plan, rather, they represent additional credits solely to fulfill my French teachable requirements. These 6.0 units would allow me to meet the minimum requirements for teacher’s college applications with a French teachable.

This request also aligns with an important opportunity I have been offered. I have been asked to work a full-time position with the Limestone District School Board for the Winter 2026 semester. Completing these courses online at Athabasca in the fall/winter from home would allow me to finish my academic requirements, drop my in-person Winter French courses, and begin working full-time in January. This would ease financial pressures, provide valuable professional experience in an educational setting, and still allow me to graduate in Spring 2026.

I have already consulted with the French Undergraduate Department, who confirmed that there are appropriate Athabasca courses that can be used to meet my French teachable requirements.

I hope you will consider granting this request given that these courses are not required for my degree completion but are essential for my future academic and career goals. I would be grateful for the opportunity to proceed with this Letter of Permission and would be happy to provide any additional details (including course syllabi or equivalency confirmations) if needed.

Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Kylie Mosgrove

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: If this petition is granted, I will complete two additional French courses online through Athabasca University in Fall 2025/Winter 2026 in order to satisfy the 30.0 units required for a French teachable. I will have already met the 102 credits required for my Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Kinesiology and remain on track to graduate in Spring 2026. These additional courses are not required for my degree but are essential for my future academic goals. In consultation with the French Undergraduate Department, I have identified FREN 420, 421, and/or 422 as appropriate options to fulfill this requirement.

Taking these courses online in the fall/winter will allow me to complete my studies, drop my Winter French courses I am enrolled in here at Queen's, and begin a position with the Limestone District School Board in January. This plan keeps my workload manageable, reduces financial strain, and provides valuable professional experience while ensuring I remain academically successful and fully prepared for teacher’s college applications.
