Petition Letter: Queens University Chemistry 282 Appeal
To whom this may concern,
I am Alexandria Joknic (10063407), a third year Biology undergrad at Queens University. I am applying for the appeal of my chemistry 282 course that I took in the 2015 winter semester. Unfortunately, due to a family illness during the 2015 winter exam period I was not able to preform to my best ability during my chemistry 282 exam.
My grandfather is ill with Alzheimers and requires constant care from my grandmother. However, she had broken her hip and remained in hospital for nearly three weeks over the exam period. Due to this accident, I was required to take care of my grandfather in Pickering. This meant that I was driving home over the three weeks, nearly three times a week to care for my grandfather. There was no one else physically able to care for them, as they have raised me because my mother is an alcoholic, and my father is not around. A huge amount of stress had been put on me over this period of time, and I was unable to study nor preform during exams to my best ability. I would drive home to care for them, and return back to Queens to sit my exams. This left me with very little time to study, and when I did have time I was emotionally scattered. I felt as though being at Queens meant neglecting the people who have done everything for me. It was a very tough time for them as well as for myself, and I struggled emotionally.
Fortunately, the day before my last exam I was able to get into contact with Health and Disability Services, where Mary Acerman was of great assistance. After explaining my situation to Mary, she was very sympathetic and mentioned that I should appeal any courses that did not go as intended. I am always on top of my schoolwork, and am passionate about succeeding with my degree. It is very unusual for myself to do extremely poorly on an exam or course, and so I am requesting an appeal for my chemistry 282 course. I am currently re-taking the chemistry 282-summer course, as I require it for my degree. I have contacted Mary Acerman from the Health and Disability Services, and she will be providing the supporting documentation required for this appeal.
