Petition Letter

Petition Letter: I am writing to respectfully petition late enrollment into HIST 219. I understand that policies and deadlines are in place to ensure fairness and consistency; however, I believe that my circumstances warrant special consideration. This petition outlines the reasons for my request, the steps I have taken to address the situation, and the ways in which granting this petition would support my academic progress and commitment to the program.

My extenuating circumstances for this petition are based upon my mental health. This was first diagnosed when I started at Queens. To address this, I took the following actions:

1) I had multiple meetings with my family physician regarding my anxiety
2) I called the Queens student Help line
3) I engaged in PASS support
4) I engaged in Academic counseling
5) I worked on changing my study habits. Specifically, I have more actively sought out support from TA and peers.
6) I began utilizing coping mechanisms such as exercise
7) I started seeing a Therapist via Queens and have seen him since

These steps resulted in promising results as my grade improved, and I found myself more able to manage a full course load. The result was that I worked myself off probation and was on track for a four-year Honours degree.
In March of 2024, I found myself in similar stressful situation. At this time, I found as well that my mental health and sleep schedule was being affected by this situation. The result was that I became exceptionally stressed and anxious making me feel out of control.
Attached to this letter is a “Queen’s University Faculty of Arts and Science Off-campus Physician’s Note” which outlines the mental health issues I’ve been facing. The form provides a timeline of the challenges I’ve been facing to provide further understanding of my mental health challenges for all parties to understand.
