Petition Letter: To the Faculty of Arts and Sciences,
I am writing to respectfully request permission to withdraw from my Calculus course after the official deadline. I recognize the importance of academic deadlines, but I experienced extenuating circumstances beyond my control that had a direct and negative impact on my academic performance, particularly in this course.
In early September, my grandmother fell seriously ill. This event caused significant stress for my family and me. My parents’ attention was focused on her care, and during this time, I was unable to have my usual conversations with them about my studies and academic planning. As I was struggling with Calculus at the beginning of the term, the circumstances I was presented with made it incredibly difficult to keep up in the course.
While this stress affected all of my courses to some extent, its impact was especially clear in Calculus. The material in the course builds quickly on itself. I struggled to keep up with assignments, and concepts that I might normally have mastered became harder to retain under the circumstances. Missing focus during a few critical weeks made it difficult to recover.
I attempted to manage the situation by continuing to attend lectures, completing assignments, and reviewing material on my own. I also spoke with tutors to try to understand the concepts I was unclear on. Despite these efforts, the stress I was under made it very hard to concentrate, and my performance in Calculus suffered more than in my other courses, where I had been able to remain on track.
As my grandmother’s condition stabilized, I regained the ability to focus on my academics and have since managed my remaining courses successfully. However, the early difficulties in Calculus have left me unable to perform at the level I expect of myself. Withdrawing from the course would allow me to protect my overall academic record and continue progressing in my studies without the ongoing burden of this setback.
For these reasons, I respectfully ask the Faculty to consider my petition to withdraw from Calculus after the deadline. Thank you for your time and understanding.
