Petition Letter: To the Faculty of Arts and Sciences,
I am writing to express my interest in enrolling in a film course after the official deadline. Academic deadlines are important, but due to extenuating circumstances which were beyond my control, I was unable to make this request before the deadline.
Earlier in September, I expressed my struggles in my Calculus course to my parents. I suggested enrolling in the course FILM 111 and withdrawing from the calculus course, since film has always been something I was interested in. Unfortunately, my grandmother fell ill. Due to this, my family shifted their focus to her care while we were hoping she would get better. This was a difficult time for my family and me since I was unable to have the conversations necessary with them about enrolling in a different course.
The illness had an effect on my focus in all my courses, but significantly in calculus. Since the class is a fast-paced class, which I was already struggling with, it made it harder for me to motivate myself to try and put the work in, since I was worried about my grandmother. I was falling behind in the course and having difficulty understanding concepts that the rest of my classmates seemed to grasp easily. After attending lectures, consulting tutors and classmates, I was still lost with the majority of the concepts in the course.
As my grandmother’s condition stabilized, I started to focus more on classes and have managed the majority of my courses successfully. However, struggling early on in Calculus has left me unable to be the student I am able to be. Withdrawing from the course and enrolling in another will allow me to fully focus on all of my courses instead of struggling with just one. I will be able to continue progressing in all my courses without being worried about my calculus course.
For these reasons, I ask the Faculty to consider my petition to enroll in film after the deadline.
Thank you for your time and understanding.
Sincerely,
Miller Sherman
