Submitted in Support of a Late Course Drop Request for ENGL 100 and PHYS 115
I am requesting to late drop ENGL 100 and PHYS 115 for fall 2024 due to a series of incidents with another student which resulted in a lengthy investigation by the Student Conduct Office in which I was the complainant.
The ongoing investigation and subsequent events severely impacted my mental health and sense of safety. For the remainder of the first academic term, I experienced constant anxiety and physical symptoms such as insomnia, migraines and nausea. I was afraid to leave my dorm room, which led me to avoid attending classes on both West Campus and Main Campus. I stopped eating, as I wouldn’t leave my room, even just to go to the dining hall, without a friend accompanying me, and it was nearly impossible for me to get out of my bed most days. As a result, my academic performance declined significantly. The constant fear of encountering the other party or being subjected to further harassment or violence made it nearly impossible for me to function at all, let alone in a normal academic environment.
In January, I realized the best thing for me would be a fresh start, so I made the decision to completely switch my plan from majoring in sciences to majoring in English. Further, the other party in the conduct case was no longer in residence and this made attending my new classes so much easier, and although I was still anxious that I would run into them on campus and public spaces, I was able to get back on track academically.
This is why I am submitting this request for a late course drop for ENGL 100 and PHYS 115. I want to be able to move forward from this traumatic experience, which deeply affected my first year at Queen’s University. I do not believe I should suffer the long-term academic consequences of being unable to attend class during that time. The situation was entirely unforeseeable and had a significant impact on my mental health, which made it impossible for me to keep up with my coursework through no fault of my own.
