Dear Dr. Naaman,
I hope this message finds you well. My name is Mia Krajden, and I am a dedicated third-year Life Sciences student. I am writing to request an exemption from the 6.0-unit limit for study abroad programs, specifically for my upcoming exchange at Universitat Autônoma de Barcelona (UAB).
This exchange offers a rare opportunity to step beyond my typical science-based studies and explore subjects that connect culture, creativity, and human behaviour. While I deeply value my current coursework, I often find myself uncertain about the direction I want to take after graduation. By engaging in these interdisciplinary courses, I hope to immerse myself in Spanish culture and gain much-needed clarity about my future academic path. These courses include:
Modernisme: Art Nouveau Architecture Sketched and Explained
Emotions, Stress and Self-Regulation
Spanish Contemporary Art
Intercultural Communication
Urban Interventions, Graffiti and Public Sculpture
Each course approaches learning from a different perspective, broadening my understanding of people and the world around me. This experience will complement my scientific background and help me grow into a more well-rounded, adaptable individual with the interpersonal skills and cultural awareness needed to thrive in today’s connected world.
I fully understand the intent behind the credit limit, but I believe an exception would allow me to fully capitalize on this unique experience while maintaining steady academic progress. I have selected these courses with great care, as they align with both my academic goals and my desire for personal growth, allowing me to return to Queen’s with a clearer sense of direction as both a student and an individual.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Having considered the additional workload, I have developed a clear plan to balance my responsibilities with the rich cultural opportunities available in Barcelona. I will manage my time carefully and distribute my workload evenly across the semester to maintain strong performance. While the excitement of living in a new city will be energizing, I want to ensure it does not distract from the academic purpose of my exchange. A structured term schedule, spacing out major assignments and assessments as I do at Queen’s, will help me stay organized and avoid unnecessary pressure. Beyond organization, I will seek consistent academic guidance. Regular meetings with advisors at both Queen’s and UAB will help me monitor my progress, confirm I meet all requirements, and make adjustments as needed. These check-ins will keep me accountable, helping me adapt to the expectations of a different academic culture. Furthermore, I will prioritize my well-being by staying connected with family and friends and using the wellness resources at both universities to maintain balance. By supporting both academic goals and mental health, I will create the stability needed for success. To broaden my learning, I will make full use of UAB’s libraries and online databases to explore new academic materials and build on perspectives developed at Queen’s. Finally, I will participate in UAB’s language support programs to strengthen my Spanish proficiency, enhancing both classroom learning and daily engagement with local culture.
I understand that studying abroad will present both academic and personal challenges, but I am confident in my ability to navigate them successfully. With the resources and support systems fortunately available to me, I am well-equipped to meet the demands of this experience. Granting this exemption will allow me to fully engage in UAB’s academic environment and make the most of this opportunity for exponential growth.
