Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to have my minimum three year withdraw requirement lifted, because of the personal circumstances that occurred beyond my control. This was supposed to be my final year at Queen¿¿s and I would have been graduating come the fall 2014, if everything went according to plan. However, that is no longer the case. My future plans after Queen¿¿s would be moving to London and starting a new program which is Social Work, I felt that having a University degree would help me out tremendously.

The issues started to arise in second semester the most critical semester I had at Queen¿¿s because it would result in my gradating, however, second semester was a long and emotional one for me. I informed my parents of my plans after Queen¿¿s and they were less than happy. They felt I was throwing my life away by moving to another city; they were comparing me to my cousin who has not gone anywhere in his life; they did not talk to me for months, and if they did it was to belittle me, and try and make me change my mind in what I wanted to do after school. They did not like that I was making my own decisions as a 22 year old adult, and not moving back home. My parents play a large role in my life, they are my best friends and I turn to them for everything, so with them acting like this, it really affected me. I was depressed, I felt like I lost my support system, people who always stood by me and help me succeed, and as a result my grades suffered, a lot which made me end up failing 2 of my mandatory courses. I felt like I had no one to go too, because no one would understand what I was going through; especially because whenever things would happen in the past my parents were the first ones I would turn too and ask for help, and I felt I no longer had that.

When this was happening I went to student health and talked to a lady about everything going on, because I just could not handle it anymore, it was about 2 ¿¿ 2.5 months and everything was still going on with my parents and it was not getting any better. As mentioned above, they did not talk to me, I felt like they disowned me as a daughter.

Lastly, I am a student who makes every deadline, I never have had to ask for extensions, and this was the first time in all my years of academics that I had to ask my HIST218 Professor for an extension for a term paper, simply because of everything that was happening.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I have thought long and hard about my Academic Plan, and I feel like this would be the most beneficial. I will be taking a much lighter course load maybe a course a semester, because I want to achieve this goal, I want to be a proud member of the Queen¿¿s alumni.
My plan to complete my final 9 credits at Queen¿¿s university, will be happening during the summer months, when I have a break from completing my Social Worker Degree. Within my 4 years at queens, I have noticed that my greatest grades come from doing correspondence courses, I feel like I have the dedication and time commitment required to them. With that being said, I am currently taking 3 summer course, and as of now, I believe in each course I have an A, and I hand in all my assignments a couple days before they are due.

In addition, if there are no correspondence courses through Queen¿¿s when I am able to take them, I was planning on getting a letter of permission so I am able to take courses at another Universities that would go towards my Queen¿¿s degree; earning that Queen¿¿s diploma will be the greatest accomplishment of my life, it is all I have ever wanted, and I feel with these bumps along the road it has made me see what I truly want.

I feel like talking to a medical professional or a counselor will be beneficial to me, to help me deal with my issues instead of allowing them to fester and resulting in them to deter me from my academics which mean so much to me.
