Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am respectfully petitioning to drop ENGL 279 (Fall 2024) from my academic transcript due to serious extenuating circumstances that significantly affected my ability to complete the course requirements. During November and December of 2024, I experienced an acute medical episode that was both psychological and physical in nature. This episode severely impaired my daily functioning and ultimately prevented me from completing the final essay within the required timeframe.
At the time, I made the difficult mistake of attempting to persevere independently rather than seeking the support and accommodations that were available to me. I believed that pushing through my condition would allow me to maintain my academic standing, but in reality, my health challenges were beyond my control. I deeply regret not reaching out to my professor or medical professionals sooner, and I have since reflected extensively on this experience. It has been a pivotal learning moment that has reshaped how I approach both my health and my academic responsibilities.
Since that period, I have taken deliberate steps to build a stronger support system and to prioritize my well-being alongside my academic goals. I have now graduated from Queen’s University with my BA and am currently enrolled at St. Lawrence College in the Early Childhood Education program. In this field, I am thriving academically and personally, gaining confidence and fulfillment through serving others - particularly students with special needs. This path has reaffirmed my passion for education and my commitment to continued growth.
Looking ahead, I plan to apply to the part-time Bachelor of Education program at the University of Ottawa. Unfortunately, the failing grade in ENGL 279 does not accurately reflect my academic ability or dedication, as it was the result of exceptional and temporary circumstances. If this grade were removed, my overall GPA would be 3.0, which more accurately represents my academic performance and potential. I am a motivated, engaged, and passionate learner, and this experience has strengthened my resilience and self-awareness.
I respectfully ask that you consider removing this failing grade from my transcript. Doing so would allow my academic record to better reflect my true capabilities and the growth I have achieved since this incident. Thank you very much for your time, understanding, and consideration.
Sincerely,
Lauren Thomas
