Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To whom this may concern,

I am writing to respectfully request reconsideration of my petition to withdraw from courses for the Fall 2023 and Winter 2024 academic terms by waiving the petition deadline.

Due to extenuating circumstances, including a severe hand injury in November 2023 that required surgery and prolonged recovery, as well as significant psychological challenges, my ability to make timely and informed decisions regarding my academic responsibilities was compromised. My extenuating circumstances in the winter of 2024 did not go as planned either, as my suggested timeline for a full recovery got delayed beyond my control, which caused me to miss a significant portion of the semester. My professors were not able to judge the gravity of my injury which inhibited my physical ability to complete most academic coursework, primarily in-person examinations. Coping alone, away from family and social support, further exacerbated these difficulties. After filing the first petition in May 2024 with all the medical reports from the Kingston Hospital, I did not hear back from the university, as I was eagerly waiting for the response. I emailed Haley Everson to understand the status and was told that the response was sent to my email in 2024 Fall, which I did not receive. This caused the inability to act within the deadline.

As documented in the attached letter from the Resiliency Clinic, these circumstances had a direct and substantial impact on both my physical and mental health, leading to symptoms of anxiety and depression. These factors impaired my judgment as well and prevented me from initiating course withdrawal within the usual timelines.

I am therefore requesting the drop of the following courses from my academic record:

I believe granting this request would provide a fair and accurate reflection of my academic potential, given that these challenges were beyond my control. I am committed to resuming my studies with renewed focus and resilience.
