I am requesting a CR designation for MATH 121, which I completed during the summer term in 2025. My performance in this course was significantly affected by circumstances beyond my control related to repeated and unresolved technical difficulties with ProctorU, which was the proctor service used for both the midterm and final examination.
Throughout the summer term, both major examinations for MATH 121 were severely disrupted due to ongoing technical issues with ProctorU. Despite routinely testing my computer in advance, I experienced prolonged delays, system errors, and interruptions during both assessments.
During the first examination in June, I was scheduled to begin writing at 12:30 p.m. However, due to difficulties launching the exam, I had over three different ProctorU technical support agents trying to resolve the issue and was ultimately unable to access the exam until approximately three hours after the original start time. This delay was extremely disruptive, as by the time I completed the exam, I had been seated in the same room for nearly six consecutive hours. Throughout this period, I was unable to take breaks or access food, as I remained under continuous ProctorU surveillance and leaving the camera view would have been a breach of academic integrity.
In preparation for the final examination, I contacted my professor to request permission to write the exam in person, as I was deeply concerned that similar technical difficulties might occur again. This request was denied. I therefore took additional precautions by using a different computer, logging in several days in advance, and completing all ProctorU equipment checks, which indicated that my system was functioning properly.
On the day of the final exam, approximately 45 minutes into the assessment, I was abruptly disconnected. I then worked with nearly a dozen ProctorU technical support personnel in an attempt to regain access. By the time I was able to reconnect, the exam had automatically timed out as the three hour limit had elapsed. I was informed by ProctorU that no further action could be taken on their end and that I would need to contact my instructor.
Despite these challenges, I met with my professor during office hours in September in an effort to improve my standing in the course. However, due to the incompleteness of the final examination submission, opportunities for partial credit were extremely limited. These circumstances were entirely beyond my control and do not reflect a lack of preparation or effort on my part. The repeated technical disruptions and extensive troubleshooting significantly interfered with my exam performance and directly contributed to a final grade that does not accurately represent my academic ability or understanding of the course material.
Given the documented technical difficulties, I am requesting MATH 121 to be designated as CR on my transcript. Granting this request would allow my academic record to more accurately reflect my true performance.
