Petition Letter:
I am writing to request a review based on extenuating circumstances that were beyond my control and that directly affected my academic performance on Math 281 and Math 210 in May 2025.
In early May 2025, I experienced two consecutive days of sudden and severe vomiting, which rendered me physically unable to attend my scheduled deferred examinations. The onset was acute and unexpected, and my condition made it impossible for me to sit for exams or complete academic obligations at that time.
Following this episode, my gastrointestinal condition did not fully resolve. In the weeks and months that followed, I continued to experience recurrent nausea and vomiting, often occurring after regular meals. Although there were periods of partial improvement, my symptoms repeatedly worsened during times of heightened stress. These ongoing physical symptoms significantly interfered with my ability to study consistently, concentrate, and meet academic demands.
I sought medical attention and was prescribed medication to manage my gastrointestinal symptoms. Over the summer, I also became increasingly aware that my condition involved both a physical component related to my stomach and a psychological component associated with anxiety. As a result, I sought support from a counselor to address the anxiety contributing to the recurrence of symptoms. In addition, I have a prior medical history of clinically diagnosed depression and complex PTSD, which increased my vulnerability to stress-related physical symptoms and further affected my academic functioning during this period.
These circumstances were ongoing and beyond my control, and they directly impacted my ability to attend the deferred examinations and to function academically during and after the affected period. I made efforts to seek appropriate medical and psychological support once I was able, but the combination of acute illness and subsequent recurring symptoms substantially disrupted my academic performance.
I respectfully request that these extenuating circumstances be taken into consideration in the review of my petition. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Yan Xu
