Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am writing to request permission to drop MATH 474 after the course deadline due to extenuating circumstances beyond my control that directly affected my academic performance.

Before the drop deadline, I had already been considering withdrawing from MATH 474 (During early December, before the final drop deadline). During that period, I developed a severe case of influenza and submitted an Academic Consideration request. Due to my illness, I was unable to make a timely and informed decision to drop the course before the deadline.

Throughout the semester, MATH 474 caused significant psychological stress. Although the course listed minimal prerequisites, it required extensive background knowledge in statistics and mathematics. This resulted in persistent anxiety and difficulty engaging with the course material.

As the final examination approached, the stress of preparing for this course led to severe anxiety, insomnia, and dizziness. On the day of the final exam, these symptoms prevented me from completing the assessment, and I applied for an exam deferral. At that time, I was not aware that petitioning to drop the course remained an option.

These circumstances had a direct and significant impact on my academic performance and were beyond my control. I respectfully request approval to retroactively drop MATH 474. I have since reflected on my course selection and will ensure future choices better of courses align with my academic ability.
