Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to formally submit a petition regarding my inability to enroll in CHEM 282 for the Winter semester. I am a fourth-year Life Sciences student planning to graduate this Spring, and CHEM 282 is a required course for the completion of my degree.

Despite making consistent efforts to enroll, I was unable to secure a spot in the course due to circumstances beyond my control. Because I previously completed the first organic chemistry course through the Biochemistry stream, SOLUS did not recognize this prerequisite as equivalent. As a result, a manual override from the Chemistry Department was required before I could be added to the waitlist. I contacted the Life Sciences Department, who directed me to the Chemistry Department, and once the issue was resolved, I was placed on the waitlist. Unfortunately, due to the time required to complete this process, I was added to the waitlist too late to receive a spot in the course.

This delay directly affected my ability to enroll in CHEM 282 and has now become the sole barrier preventing me from graduating on time. I have since contacted the course instructor, Professor John Carran, who has granted permission for me to enroll in the course. Additionally, the Chemistry Department has approved the use of my previously completed laboratory component from the Biochemistry organic chemistry course, meaning I would only require enrollment in the lecture portion of CHEM 282.

If my petition is granted, I have a clear plan in place to ensure my academic success. As this issue was administrative and has now been resolved, I do not anticipate further barriers to my progress. I have carefully structured my remaining course load to allow sufficient time to focus on CHEM 282 and successfully complete the course. I am fully prepared to engage with course materials from the start of the term, attend all lectures, and seek support through office hours or academic advising as needed to maintain strong academic standing and meet graduation requirements.

I respectfully request consideration of this petition, as the circumstances that prevented my enrollment were administrative in nature and beyond my control. Approval would allow me to complete my degree requirements and graduate as planned this Spring.
