Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean of Academics,

I am writing to appeal for a second exam deferral for the course MICR 483 (fall 2025).

In December, I became ill with the flu and was unable to complete the initial MICR 483 final exam. I submitted an academic consideration request, which was approved, and the exam was rescheduled to January 15th.

Earlier in the term, I was prescribed a new class of medication to manage my disability. Over the following months, my dosage was gradually increased due to limited symptom improvement and negative side effects. In late December, I made a significant increase in dosage in hopes of achieving cognitive and functional benefits.

In the weeks leading up to the rescheduled exam, I experienced severe and unexpected cognitive side effects, including dissociation, impaired memory, and difficulty thinking clearly. I was unable to retain information for more than a few minutes and was functioning well below my usual cognitive capacity. At the time, I did not fully recognize the severity of these effects due to the nature of the cognitive impairment itself. Thankfully, my partner encouraged me to document my experiences due to noticeable changes in my cognition and mental stability, which is the primary reason I am able to accurately recall this period.

It was due to this dissociative state, that I could not complete my exam. Given the severity of these effects, I independently discontinued the medication on the morning of January 16 after realizing I was not cognitively sound.

The earliest appointment I could secure with my nurse practitioner was January 22. During this appointment, we discussed the medication-related issues, and they agreed that discontinuing the medication was appropriate. They have agreed to provide a letter of support confirming my circumstances; however, due to the timing of this petition deadline, I am unable to attach it today. I have attached a letter of support from another petition I recently completed for a late course addition. Please let me know if you require a separate letter that specifically addresses the exam deferral, and I will request it from my nurse practitioner.

My medication regimen has now been changed to a different class of medications, and I am already experiencing improvement in my symptoms after changing my medication. I will continue to meet regularly with my nurse practitioner to monitor my progress and manage any future issues. I am confident that I am now able to complete my MICR 483 exam to my best abilities.

Thank you very much for your consideration of this petition.
