Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Assosiate Dean
I am submitting this petition letter to request an exemption from the January 23, 2026, application deadline in order to take HIST 231 in the winter semester of 2026. This course is necessary for me to complete the remaining degree requirements and graduate. I sincerely apologize for making this request.
I fully understand the importance of academic deadlines and the administrative processes that support them, and I deeply regret that I was unable to meet these deadlines in this case. Unfortunately, due to circumstances entirely beyond my control, I was unable to determine whether I needed to enrol in an additional course before the January 16 add deadline or to submit a petition by the January 23 deadline.
My final examination for a Fall 2025 course was deferred for medical reasons. As a result, I wrote my final exam on January 18th and my final grade and confirmation of whether I would receive credit for that course were not available between January 16 and January 23. Because my graduation status depended on the outcome of this deferred exam, I was unable to determine whether I would be short one course for graduation. This uncertainty directly affected my ability to add or petition for another Winter 2026 course. Before January 16, I did not know whether an additional course was required, and after January 16, the Winter 2026 drop deadline had passed. Since my deferred exam result was not released until after the drop deadline, enrolling in another course in advance would have meant that I could not drop it in time if it turned out not to be needed, resulting in a significant financial penalty. Under these circumstances, it was not reasonable for me to enrol in another course through SOLUS before January 16 or to submit a petition by January 23.
I sincerely regret the additional administrative burden this request may cause. However, this situation arose directly from an approved medical deferral and the resulting delay in the release of my final grade, which prevented me from making an informed academic decision before the January 16 and January 23 deadlines.
If this waiver is granted, I will be able to submit a subsequent petition to add HIST 231 and complete my final degree requirement so that I may graduate as planned. I am fully committed to meeting all academic obligations associated with this course.
Thank you very much for your time, patience, and kind consideration.
Sincerely
Taiyo Suzuki
