Petition Letter
Petition Letter: I am writing to respectfully request consideration to add a course past the enrollment deadline.
During the final examination period of the previous term, I experienced a physical illness that required me to defer final examinations on the morning it was scheduled. This occurred alongside ongoing health challenges and resulted in a period of significant mental stress and anxiety. The uncertainty surrounding deferred examinations further compounded this stress and affected my ability to manage academic decisions with my usual clarity.
At the time, I believed that additional examinations might also be deferred, which led me to focus my preparation on a single confirmed final examination while awaiting clarification on the others. As my confirmed examination took place on January 18, and the course add deadline closed on January 16, my attention remained on completing that examination during this highly compressed period.
As a result, in this period of uncertainty I inadvertently created, I made an error in managing my course enrollment, including dropping a course that I later realized I should have remained enrolled in. By the time this became clear, the deadline to add the appropriate course had passed.
I take full responsibility for this oversight. However, I respectfully submit that the combination of illness, heightened stress, and uncertainty during the final examination period directly contributed to this mistake. This was not a matter of neglect, but rather the result of an atypical and demanding academic situation.
I am requesting this exception in good faith and with a strong commitment to maintaining academic progress and meeting all course requirements going forward. I respectfully ask that this request be considered in light of the circumstances described and the steps I have taken to ensure stability and academic success moving forward.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: The past two academic years reflect a period during which ongoing health challenges, including physical health issues, bereavement, and mental setbacks, significantly interfered with my ability to engage with my studies consistently. During this time, I experienced a sustained mental and academic block that affected both performance and decision making. I recognize that these academic records do not reflect my capabilities, my commitment to completing my degree, or the standards I hold for myself.
The conditions that contributed to these difficulties are now being actively addressed. I have implemented multiple support systems both within and outside of Queen’s, including regular engagement with Queen’s student services, a tutor, therapeutic support and strides to improve my health with medical follow-ups and referrals to appropriate specialists. I am also communicating proactively with my professors to establish clear expectations and accountability. I remain fully committed to completing the academic journey I have started.
These steps represent a significant change in how I approach my studies. Rather than attempting to manage academic demands independently, I now have structured supports, routine check-ins, and professional guidance in place to monitor progress and address challenges early. I am assured these supports and this framework allow me to engage with coursework material consistently and effectively, before any academic issues spiral out of control. I am confident these steps will be effective, as similar supports have yielded positive results in the past.
This petition represents a step in re-establishing a coherent academic path and continuing my studies responsibly. I am fully committed to completing my degree and rebuilding my academic standing in a way that reflects my true potential. My focus moving forward is on steady, consistent improvement and sustained engagement with my studies. I respectfully ask that this plan and the concrete steps I have taken be considered in evaluating my request.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Jean Emmanuel Chort
