Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern,

I am writing to respectfully request a First Level Petition to waive the deadline for dropping courses taken
during the Winter, Summer, and Fall terms of 2022 due to significant extenuating circumstances.
The courses I am requesting to withdraw from are: DRAM 251, FILM 340, FILM 350, FILM 394, FILM
260, ARTH 215, DEVS 306, FILM 336, and FILM 339.
In 2022, I experienced a serious progression of a substance use disorder that deeply affected my personal
stability, emotional well-being, and academic performance. What initially appeared to be harmless
experimentation evolved into a life-altering illness that gradually distanced me from my studies, my
passions, and my sense of self. As my condition worsened, my ability to meet academic expectations
declined significantly, ultimately leading me to step away from my education.
At the time, I did not fully grasp the severity of what I was experiencing. Substance use disorder is a
progressive illness, and it slowly overtook my priorities, my focus, and my health. I now recognize that
the sharp decline in my academic record in 2022 directly correlates with this period of personal crisis.
In 2025, at a point of profound personal reckoning, I sought help and committed myself fully to recovery.
Through active engagement in the 12-Step programs of Alcoholics Anonymous and Cocaine Anonymous,
along with professional treatment, I have rebuilt my life with intention and accountability. I am currently
eight months sober from all mood- and mind-altering substances and remain deeply committed to
maintaining my recovery. I continue to participate in community-based support programs and strive to
serve others whenever possible.
With stability restored and clarity regained, returning to complete my degree has become one of my
highest priorities. Education represents not only an academic goal but also a meaningful step in rebuilding
a responsible, purpose-driven life. I respectfully ask the Faculty of Arts and Science to consider waiving
the course drop deadlines for the terms listed above, as the grades earned during that period do not reflect
my true academic capabilities but rather the impact of an untreated medical condition.
My academic record prior to 2022 demonstrates consistent engagement and capability. I am confident
that, given the opportunity, I can successfully complete my degree and contribute positively to the
academic community.
Please find attached documentation from my treatment centre, including a letter and a graduation form, to
provide medical context for these circumstances.
