Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: During the term, I experienced extenuating circumstances beyond my control that had a significant and sustained impact on my academic performance. Most notably, I sustained a knee injury that affected my mobility and overall physical well-being. This injury made it difficult to move around campus, attend academic commitments consistently, and maintain the level of focus and engagement required to perform at my usual academic standard. The effects of this injury persisted over a meaningful portion of the term and disrupted my ability to engage consistently with course material. This injury was witnessed by my coach, and I am able to provide documentation if required.

In addition to this physical limitation, the term was further disrupted by the TA strike, which created an unusual academic environment. The strike reduced access to instructional support, limited opportunities to receive feedback, and disrupted the normal structure of the course. This made it more challenging to clarify course material, prepare effectively for assessments, and gauge my understanding of key concepts throughout the term. The combination of these disruptions created a situation in which I was navigating both personal and institutional challenges simultaneously.

These circumstances directly affected my performance in PSYC 100. While I made every effort to remain engaged with the course and complete all required components, including assignments and the final examination, I was not able to perform at a level that reflects my true academic ability. In particular, the cumulative impact of reduced mobility, inconsistent engagement, and limited access to academic support affected my ability to prepare for and perform on key evaluations. As a result, the final grade I received does not accurately represent my understanding of the course material or my typical academic performance.

Throughout this period, I took steps to manage these challenges as effectively as possible. I continued to engage with course content when I was physically able, adapted my study habits to account for my limitations, and made efforts to stay on track despite the disruptions. However, despite these efforts, the combined impact of my injury and the broader academic circumstances made it difficult to fully mitigate the effects on my performance.

The timing and duration of these circumstances were particularly impactful, as they coincided with important periods of the course, including preparation for major assessments. This overlap further limited my ability to recover academically within the term and contributed to a final outcome that does not reflect my capabilities as a student.

I would also like to note that these challenges were temporary and situational, rather than reflective of my overall academic ability or approach to my studies. Under normal circumstances, I am confident in my ability to perform at a significantly higher level, and I take my academic responsibilities seriously. This request is not an attempt to avoid accountability, but rather to ensure that my academic record fairly reflects my abilities in light of the circumstances I faced.

Given that I completed all course requirements and achieved a passing grade, but did so under conditions that substantially impaired my performance, I respectfully request that Credit Standing (CR) be granted for PSYC 100. I believe this designation would more accurately reflect both my completion of the course and the exceptional circumstances that affected my performance.
