Dear Academic Petitions Committee:
I am writing to request a retroactive medical leave for the Fall/Winter 2025-2026 academic year.
This past year has been much more difficult than I expected due to several medical issues that affected my ability to keep up with my coursework. In October, I suffered a concussion. At first, I thought I would recover quickly, but I continued to experience symptoms like difficulty concentrating, mental fatigue, headaches, and trouble focusing for long periods of time. These symptoms made it very hard to study, attend lectures consistently, and complete assignments effectively.
I also had surgery for a separate medical issue in December 2025 which caused a late start for the Winter term. Additionally, incidental findings required further medical investigations. This meant multiple appointments, testing, and specialist visits throughout this year. These health issues were unrelated, but happening at the same time made it overwhelming. I have continued to miss class time because of ongoing appointments and follow-up investigations.
I tried to continue with my courses because I didn’t want to fall behind, and I hoped my health would improve quickly. Looking back, I can see that I was not physically or mentally able to manage a full course load. The combination of recovering from a concussion, surgery, and the stress of ongoing medical testing significantly affected my academic performance.
While I’m disappointed with the turn this year has taken, I take responsibility for my academic record, and I am committed to returning when I am fully ready to succeed. My plan is to repeat first year in September 2026, once my health is stable. Moving forward, I intend to continue medical follow-ups as needed and meet with an academic advisor before re-enrolling to ensure I have a realistic and manageable plan.
I respectfully ask the Committee to consider the medical circumstances that affected my first year and grant a retroactive medical leave. I attach a letter of support from my family physician, Dr. Trixie Gregoire.
