Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To the Office of the Associate Dean,
Faculty of Arts and Science
Queen’s University
I am writing to request approval to reweight the midterm examination in CHEM 222, with the midterm grade removed and its weight transferred to the final examination. I have already discussed this request with my instructor, who indicated that she is willing to support this adjustment pending approval from the Associate Dean.
This request is based on significant extenuating psychological circumstances that were beyond my control and that directly impaired my academic performance during the period of the midterm. Earlier in the term, I experienced an unexpected and distressing event when I was removed from the varsity soccer roster. This event had a substantial emotional and psychological impact, resulting in heightened stress, difficulty concentrating, and a marked decline in my academic functioning.
The timing of this mental health disruption directly overlapped with the weeks surrounding the CHEM 222 midterm, and I was not in a stable state to perform to my usual academic standard. My instructor is aware of the situation and has confirmed that she supports the reweighting request.
At the time, I underestimated the seriousness of my condition and did not seek academic consideration or petition prior to the midterm. I now understand that the psychological impact was significant enough to warrant accommodation, and I am seeking to address this through the appropriate petition process.
I am prepared to provide supporting documentation from a relevant professional confirming the timing, severity, and academic impact of the circumstances, as required by the Academic Petitions regulations. My condition has since improved, and I am actively managing my mental health to ensure it does not continue to affect my academic performance.
Given the clear timing of the psychological event, its debilitating effect on my academic performance, and the instructor’s support for this adjustment, I respectfully request approval to remove the midterm grade and reweight its value to the final examination for CHEM 222.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Samuel Asenuga
