A) The Request:
I am submitting an appeal for a late drop in PSYC 501/9.0 Honours Thesis, in hopes of having the ¿¿IN¿ for PSYC 501 changed to a ¿¿DR¿ on my transcript.
B) Extenuating Circumstances:
Throughout this 2014-2015 academic year, I faced several health issues that prevented me from succeeding academically with my PSYC 501 thesis.
During the Fall semester, shortly after Thanksgiving, I was diagnosed with Ramsey Hunt Syndrome (RHS). This illness caused complete paralysis of one side of my face, along with extreme vertigo and resulting nausea. As such, I was unable to complete any of my academic responsibilities. At this time I dropped my other courses, but remained enrolled in my thesis with hopes that I would heal in a few weeks and then be able to make up for lost time during the Winter semester.
Looking at my supporting documentation, I was deemed completely incapacitated in an academic sense from October 14th- October 21st, 2014, and then again from October 21st ¿¿ November 7th, 2014. I think it is important to note that although this documentation only excuses me from academics up to November 7th, I was no longer enrolled in any classes except for my thesis past this date. Furthermore, my thesis supervisor, supervising graduate student, and I had decided to defer the work on my thesis until January, as I was completely unable to work at the time due to the facial paralysis, nausea, and vertigo.
After my difficult fall term experiencing physical health issues, I began experiencing severe mental health issues in the winter term. Namely, the anti-depressants I had been on for years felt like they had stopped working. I began to feel like I could no longer cope with any aspect of being, and again dropped all of my courses with the exception of my thesis. I remained in my thesis with the hopes that if it was my sole priority, I would start to feel better, be able to focus, and successfully work on it. Unfortunately, I continued to deteriorate throughout the semester and early summer until receiving the help I needed from a psychiatrist.
As indicated in my supporting documentation, I was deemed completely incapacitated in an academic sense from January 5th, 2015 onwards.
C) Future Plan
This year, I am going to take the seminar option as opposed to the thesis option to complete my Psychology (BSc) degree, as I believe this option has more flexibility. Additionally, I am only going to be taking 3 courses per semester, providing me with a less intensive and less stressful academic plan. Finally, I am going to continue seeing my therapist along with regular check-ins with my General Practitioner to ensure I am in good mental and physical health.
