Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: I am writing to formally request consideration regarding my missed final examination scheduled for April 20, 2026, and to seek an alternative arrangement outside of the standard May deferred exam period. The reason for this request is due to significant extenuating circumstances beyond my control that directly affected my academic performance and ability to complete the exam. On April 15, 2026, my mother experienced a severe medical emergency involving anaphylaxis and was hospitalized in critical condition. This event was both sudden and highly distressing, as her condition has been unstable and recurrent, and there continues to be ongoing concern for her safety. This situation occurred during the critical period leading up to my final exam. From April 15 onward, this situation significantly exacerbated ongoing mental health challenges I have been managing, resulting in acute anxiety, emotional distress, and a marked inability to concentrate or prepare for the examination. The cumulative impact of these circumstances left me in a state where I did not feel capable of performing to my academic standard or sitting the exam in a meaningful way. In addition to the immediate impact on my exam preparation, I am required to return home to BC to support my mental well-being and family while my mother continues to receive medical treatment, including further hospital visits and specialist care. As a result, I am unable to remain in Kingston or return during the May deferred exam period. To address these circumstances, I am in the process of seeking support from a counselor and will be providing documentation related to my mental health challenges during this time. Given the timing, severity, and ongoing nature of these events, I am requesting the opportunity to complete the deferred examination at a later date or through an alternative format, such as remotely or during a future deferred exam period.
