Petition Letter

Petition Letter: The Associate Dean (Academic)

My name is Rownesha Spencer. I am petitioning for a credit standing for PSYC 251 (Winter, 2026).

The explanation: during the first half of the semester, I was given an assignment to complete on the Genie (language development and the stages it can affect development if not properly treated). During this time, I was experiencing allegations of abuse to a minor at work which resulted in my suspension followed by an investigation which is still ongoing. During this time, I relied on family and friends as support paired with my medical professional prescribing medication for my ADHD diagnosis.

So, when the instructions were given for the assignment, I read them along with the case study. i then looked online for examples of how the essay was written and compared it to the information that was given. After the essay was submitted and I waited for my grade, I received a reply of the majority of my work highlighted in red paired with a Turnitin report stating that 84% of my work was like another student.

During the semester this was not the only class I was registered in. I am only petitioning for this class because even though I received a 0 for a next assignment in PSYC 305, I felt better able to communicate myself with that professor than with the professor of PSYC 251. Not only was I able to better communicate, but there were also no major assignments at that time for PSYC 305.

I did not drop the course earlier because I believed that the problem could be resolved for the next assignment (it did), as I took steps to speak to the professor but was still met with resistance and I turned to SASS for help. This was only after I tried getting help from the TA’s which again was not fruitful.

Then it was time for the final exam, which consisted of 110multiple-choice and 8-long answers at the time I thought was short answers and I emailed the professor about it and was given the fact of 8-long answers (3-5 paragraphs) which all needed to be completed. As I never completed an exam of such density, I was anxious even with the 3hr time window, I felt it to be a lot for a final exam.

After completing the exam, I felt relieved but still on edge due to the 20% I had lost earlier. I checked my ONQ Sunday 2, May 2026 where I noticed the exam mark was placed, and I was 2% shy of a passing grade.

My plan is to appeal for a credit standing to round up my grade and to redo the assignment I lost the full 20% of or to complete something to obtain my 2% pass mark requirement. As stated to the professor, I will use the TA’s and SASS as extra resources instead of work found online to avoid further departure from academic integrity.
