Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I am writing to respectfully request permission to add LAW 204 and LAW 208 after the enrollment deadline. I was unable to register for these courses before the deadline of May 8th because my student account was on hold due to outstanding Fall and Winter tuition fees. During the Fall term, and continuing into the Winter term, I experienced significant medical and mental health difficulties that greatly affected my ability to manage both my academic and financial responsibilities. As a result, I was unable to participate in my studies or function properly during the Winter term, which contributed to the outstanding balance that remained on my account.
Once I was better mentally and physically, I worked to resolve the balance before the add course deadline. I submitted payment on April 27th with the intention of clearing the hold in time to register for my summer courses. Unfortunately, due to a processing issue with the bank, the payment was taken from my mother’s account instead of my own. I had to quickly transfer her the funds, then we were left to wait for the school to process the payment. After a few days, I received an email saying this transaction was declined and the funds were deposited back into my mother’s bank account. We had to wait another day for her to be able to transfer the money back to me before I could repeat the payment process through the CIBC portal. Due to this, the payment took much longer than expected to go through - it was only just processed and the hold lifted today, May 9th, after the registration deadline had already passed.
If the payment had been processed within the expected timeframe, I would have been able to enroll before the deadline. I had every intention of taking these courses and made efforts to resolve the issue as early as I could. These courses are especially important to me because I am now in a much better place medically and mentally, and I am eager to continue learning and rebuilding my academic momentum over the summer, particularly because I had been previously unable to participate in and enjoy my courses. They are also required for a law certificate that I plan to complete, making them important for my long-term academic goals as well.
I would sincerely appreciate your consideration of my request to enroll late in these courses. I am fully prepared to catch up on any missed work and participate actively moving forward. Thank you very much for your time and understanding.
Sincerely,
Kaiya Winter

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Over the past several months, I have been taking active steps to improve both my health and my ability to manage academic responsibilities successfully moving forward. I am continuing to address my medical and mental health concerns with appropriate professional support (a psychiatrist, a psychotherapist, and my doctor), and my condition has improved significantly compared to the Fall and Winter terms.
I have also spoken with an academic advisor to help plan a manageable return to my studies. In addition, my doctor has recommended that I take a lighter course load while transitioning back into academics. As a result, I am approaching my studies much more carefully and intentionally than I was previously able to. Taking these summer courses is part of rebuilding a stable academic routine and gradually returning to full academic engagement in a manageable and sustainable way. I am committed to staying organized, keeping up with coursework consistently, and seeking support early if difficulties arise. Completing these courses is also an important step toward my long-term academic goal of obtaining a law certificate, which has given me motivation and direction in my studies.
I believe the steps I have taken to improve my health and academic habits will allow me to succeed moving forward.
Sincerely,
Kaiya Winter
