Petition Letter: Subject: Request for Credit Standing for MATH 112 Due to Extenuating Circumstances

Dear Associate Dean,

I am writing to respectfully request Credit Standing (CR) for MATH 112 due to documented extenuating medical circumstances that significantly impacted my performance on the deferred final examination.

During the period leading up to and including the deferred exam in April 2026, I experienced severe sleep disruption, insomnia, significant anxiety symptoms related to my ADHD medication, and periods of low mood/depression. These conditions substantially impaired my concentration, ability to study, memory recall, and exam performance. My academic advisor was informed of these challenges throughout, and the final exam was deferred twice previously for these reasons.

Throughout the fall 2025 term, my performance in MATH 112 was strong, maintaining an 89% average on earlier assessments. The final grade of D, which followed the deferred exam, does not reflect my demonstrated ability in the course under normal conditions. I experienced severe anxiety and depression before and during the exam, but felt immense pressure to take it, as it had already been deferred twice, leaving me with no choice but to proceed, despite being medically unfit at the time.

I completed and passed the course and am therefore requesting CR rather than removal of the course. CR is important for my academic progression and will help ensure my GPA is not disproportionately affected by this medical episode. If CR is not available, I would appreciate consideration for a late drop (DR) as an alternative, though I prefer to retain the credit.

I am submitting this petition urgently and will provide supporting documentation from Student Wellness Services and my psychologist shortly. I am actively seeking support for my mental health and have been in contact with both my academic advisor and my psychologist to help manage these challenges.

In the meantime, I kindly request that my record for this course be noted as “Under Review” while my documentation is being finalized.
