Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I'm writing this petition letter to request for a late drop for MATH 121A/B.
At the time I initially completed the course, MATH 121 was part of the core courses necessary for first year status computing students. My first attempt completing the six unit course was unsuccessful, as I was experiencing difficulty adjusting to residency. Despite my efforts to retake the course the following summer in hopes of improving academically in the course, I wasn't able to achieve a passing grade. The following fall semester, the course had been removed from the core computing curriculum. This is significant in my specific case because even though the course isn't tied to my direct progression in my undergraduate journey, the grade continues to substantially impact my GPA at a very critical point in my academic career.
I acknnowledge the importance of academic accountability, and am not trying to minimize my own responsibility tied to my success in the course. Rather, I am requesting consideration based on the fact that for the upcoming plan selection, decisions are going to be made based off requirements associated with a pathway that materially changed post-completion of the course. My decision to take MATH 121 was based solely off the fact that it was a core course in my program, and now that it no longer aligns with my academic goals or requirements, I do not intend on retaking the course going forward.
For the past year I've been working on improving my academic standing as I was initially placed on academic probation. Fortunately, after working on repairing my GPA through course re-taking and further dedication to my program, I am no longer under academic probation. Despite that, I am still not fully at the required threshold for automatic acceptance into computing plans. After discussing these circumstances with academic advising throughly, I've been able to devise an academic blueprint to assist me in my studies. Through our thorough conversations, I was advised to pursue an academic petition for a late drop in order to support my continued academic progress.
Given the change in the core curriculum and course requirements, I respectfully ask those reviewing this petition to consider granting me a late drop so that my academic standing improves as the course is no longer mandatory.

Appeal Grounds
Appeals to the Board of Studies must include a letter based on one or more of the Grounds for Appeal (Appeal Regulation 3.4). What are the grounds you are basing your appeal on?
- The Associate Dean's decision did not follow the rules of procedural fairness. A breach of procedural fairness includes such things as the Associate Dean failed to:
- Make a reasonable decision in your appeal. A “reasonable” decision is one that is based on evidence, thought out and supported by facts and logical inferences from the facts. To be reasonable, the decision must contain adequate reasons for the conclusions.
Appeal Grounds Details: The grounds for my appeal are not specifically in relation to the associate dean's process but further information I feel forced to provide.

Appeal Letter: Dear Academic Comittee,
The purpose of my appeal letter is to implore the committee to reconsider denying the removal of MATH 121 from my cumulative GPA. In this letter, I will be providing further contextual information surrounding the situation. Initially, I wanted to approach the angle of requirements changing rather than a serious non-academic circumstance due to reasons of a personal, preferably more private, nature.
However, there were additional incidents regarding my first-year in my academic career at Queen's University that I am now going to disclose despite their uncomfortable nature. I believed my original rationale and explanations would've been sufficient, but since this information severely affected my academic ability during that relevant period, the proper documentation for it will be forwarded.
During the term, I faced serious and intense harrassment in addition to safety issues regarding another student living on campus residence. This situation ended up escalating to property damage, discriminatory harassment, physical assault, verbal threats, theft of personal belongings (over $200 worth), and more. As a result, a no-contact order was eventually issued due to a lack a proof, as Queen's West Campus has little to no surveillance. Additionally, it should be taken into account that this was one issue among many I encountered living in residence.
This situation caused substantial emotional distress, financial loss, and severe disruption to my day-to-day life, but especially my academic situation. In fact, I ended up on academic probation, and this year I have managed to recover a bit, and restore my academic standing. However, I am still not at the point of automatic acceptance into my plan. I am now submitting the attached documentation in support of my appeal so the committee can see deeper into my rational surrounding my initial petition.
I am respectfully asking that committee reconsiders my petition, and allows for MATH 121 to be rendered to a non-GPA impacting status, in light of this documentation.
I appreciate your time and consideration, and I am hoping that the committee is able to empathize with the circumstances involved, and acknowledge my dedication to my academic career.
