Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
My name is Zhengyang Yu, and I am an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen’s University. I am writing to respectfully petition for an exception to the 6.0-unit limit for courses taken on a Letter of Permission.
At present, I have completed 117.0 units toward my degree. Since my degree requires 120.0 units, I only need one additional 3.0-unit course to complete my degree requirements. However, this remaining course must be a 300-level or above course in Mathematics or Statistics in order to satisfy my plan requirement.
I understand that students in the Faculty of Arts and Science are normally permitted to take a maximum of 6.0 units through a Letter of Permission, and I have already used 6.0 units through previous LOP coursework. However, I am requesting permission to take one additional 3.0-unit course through LOP because Queen’s does not appear to offer an eligible 300-level or above Mathematics or Statistics course during the summer term.
This situation creates a significant difficulty for me. My study permit/visa will expire in September, and I am very close to completing my degree. If I cannot take this final required course during the summer, I may be unable to complete my degree before my immigration status expires. Since I only require one final course, I hope to complete this requirement as soon as possible through an equivalent course at another institution.
Therefore, I respectfully request an exception allowing me to take an additional 3.0-unit course on a Letter of Permission, beyond the normal 6.0-unit limit. The course would be selected to meet the requirement for a 300-level or above Mathematics or Statistics course, and I would ensure that it is approved as equivalent before enrolling.
I would be very grateful if my petition could be considered, as this exception would allow me to complete my degree requirements in a timely manner and avoid serious academic and immigration-related difficulties. I am happy to provide any supporting documents, including my academic record, proof of completed units, evidence of my study permit expiry date, and information showing that Queen’s does not offer an eligible course in the summer term.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Zhengyang Yu

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Dear Associate Dean,
If my petition is granted, my academic plan is to complete one additional 3.0-unit 300-level or above Mathematics or Statistics course at another accredited institution through a Letter of Permission during the summer term.
Before enrolling in the course, I will confirm that the course is appropriate for my remaining plan requirement and complete the required Letter of Permission approval process through Queen’s. I will also communicate with the Faculty of Arts and Science and/or my department if needed to make sure the course can be used toward my degree requirements.
Because I have already completed 117.0 units, this course is the only remaining course I need to reach the required 120.0 units and complete my degree. My goal is to finish this course successfully during the summer, submit the final transcript to Queen’s as soon as it becomes available, and complete my graduation requirements before my current student status expires in September.
To support my academic success, I will choose a course that fits my remaining degree requirement and summer schedule. I will review the course syllabus before enrolling, attend all lectures or online sessions, complete assignments on time, and contact the instructor early if I have any academic difficulties. Since I only need one final course, I will be able to focus my time and effort on completing it successfully.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Zhengyang Yu
