Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Petition Committee,
I am requesting permission to register late for the summer session MATH 121 online
course. I wish to repeat this course which I took and did not pass during the fall and
winter semesters 2025/2026. This course is important for me to stay on track in my
science degree, as it is one of the requirements for my desired degree plan. I faced
significant mental health struggles during my first year, but I am committed to improving
and believe I am capable of doing much better academically. I would greatly appreciate
the opportunity to take this course this summer.
I missed the registration deadline due to personal circumstances related to mental
health. The extreme challenges of the final exam period followed by the turmoil of
relocating in several steps to return to my home province contributed to my stress and
poor mental health status. Once I had the opportunity to recover with the support of my
psychologist and checked my marks it was only then I realized the deadline had passed
(by one business day). I immediately contacted the Associate Dean (Academic) and the
instructor for the course on May 11th.
As part of my petition to add this course late I am attaching this letter along with the
following supporting documentation.
-
A letter from my psychologist
-
Correspondence from the course instructor Dr Ping Li supporting my late
registration for this course
-
Correspondence from the undergrad assistant for the course
Thank you for considering my request. I sincerely hope that my request is granted so
that I am able to take this class.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: Academic Plan
Course of Study
I am currently pursuing a science degree and intend to continue working toward my desired degree plan. MATH 121 is an important prerequisite for my program, and completing it this summer will help me stay on track academically.
During my first year, mental health challenges significantly affected my academic performance and my ability to manage coursework and deadlines effectively. I did manage to complete all of my courses, but my academic performance was not as good as I had hoped. MATH 121 unfortunately had the worst outcome, which was an F. After reflecting on these difficulties, I remain committed to my studies and to improving my academic habits moving forward. I also know that in future years, I need a solid support system in place for my mental health, which I have implemented.
Workload Expectations
For the Summer 2026 term, I plan to focus primarily on MATH 121 so I can dedicate the necessary time and attention to the course. I believe this focussed workload will help me rebuild strong study habits and improve my academic performance.
During the Fall/Winter 2025–2026 academic year, I underestimated the extent to which stress, mental health difficulties, and major life transitions would affect my academic functioning.
I also plan to be more proactive in monitoring deadlines, maintaining organization, and balancing academic responsibilities with my personal well-being.
Strategies for Success
To support my success moving forward, I plan to:
- Continue accessing support from my psychologist as needed.
- Maintain a structured schedule for studying, assignments, and deadlines.
- Review course material consistently throughout the term rather than relying heavily on exam-period studying.
- Use calendars and reminders to stay organized and avoid missing important deadlines.
The challenges I experienced during my first year helped me recognize the importance of seeking support early and maintaining a healthier balance between academics and personal well-being. I am committed to applying these lessons moving forward and believe that completing MATH 121 this summer is an important step in continuing my academic progress successfully.
